We begin in our immediacy; our lived terrain.
Saint Louis is an assemblage of contestations,
proclivities, situations, and delineations which
position our exploration into Division, Control,
and Ruin. These qualifiers of condition are often
used as superficial demarcations of Saint Louis.
To some, they have come to represent something
neither original nor critical -- a simple fact of
culture, politics, and time. To others they are
dated, anachronistic; the narrative no longer
applies.
Division. Control. Ruin.
These words, like the city, are multiplicitous.
We seek not to rigidly define them, but to use
them as a means for reinterpreting the city;
not to reduce the complex spatial and sociopolitical
topography of Saint Louis, but to offer
a means for its examination; to examine the city
not as object, but to understand our immanence
within it.
